Wakatipu Wild 2023Season

Wakatipu Wild - 2022 National Champions!

The Wakatipu Wild had a near perfect season with a regular season record of 5-0-1 (the tie being an OT loss to Canterbury in the first round). The ladies in gold took 1st overall in the regular season, and brought home the GOLD medal in the championship game. Congratulations WILD!

The Wakatipu Wild, founded in 2020, are a women’s ice hockey team competing in the NZWIHL, based out of the southern region of New Zealand’s South Island.

The team brings women of all ages and nationalities together to further the development of women’s ice hockey locally and nationally.

The team’s players range in age from 14 to 50 years young.

As of 2023, the NZWIHL is made up of four teams:

  • Auckland Steel (Auckland)
  • Canterbury Inferno (Christchurch)
  • Dunedin Thunder Women (Dunedin)
  • Wakatipu Wild (Queenstown)

The season is typically made up of 2 weekends of round-robin games, followed by a playoffs series.

The Team is based at the Queenstown Ice Arena, which is located on Park Street in the Queenstown Gardens.
