Youth Ice Hockey
Our Youth Programs offers a fun, inclusive, and progressive hockey experience for players of all skill levels, from beginners to competitive athletes. Starting with Learn to Play, players can grow through age-based programs (U9, U12, U15, U18, U21) that focus on skill development, teamwork, and love for the game.
Through weekly practices, local Super League games, and Southern Ice Hockey League (SIHL) tournaments, players can develop in a supportive environment. For those seeking a higher level of competition, our Junior Stampede teams offer opportunities to compete at the national level.
Whether your child is lacing up skates for the first time or chasing big goals in the sport, our Youth Programs have has a place for them to thrive.

FAQs
I see the season has already started, can I still join?
Yes! New players are welcome to join at any point during the season.
What gear do I need to play youth hockey?
Full hockey gear is required for all youth players, following IIHF equipment rules for safety.
How do I know what age group my child should play in?
Age groups are based on Year of Birth. You can check the relevant age group pages on our website for details.
Where are some places to buy hockey gear?
There are no hockey gear shops in Queenstown, but most equipment can be ordered online and shipped within New Zealand through hockey gear companies.
Isn't ice hockey dangerous?
Like any sport, ice hockey carries some risk, but with proper gear, coaching, and rules in place, it's a safe and rewarding sport. We emphasize safety, respect, and skill development at every level.
Can my child play down/up a grade (e.g. U12 if they are U15 age)?
Dispensations are reviewed case by case. As a general rule, players cannot play up a grade. Playing down requires approval from QIHC and the SIHL or IHNZ.
Can I hire gear?
Yes! We offer gear hire for LTP and U12 players. It’s a great way to get started without needing to buy equipment right away. Long-term, players are expected to purchase their own gear.
